Official Description[edit]

Western Civilization I: The Ancient World to the 1500 (26-102)
An introduction to the development of Western Culture from the Ancient World through the Renaissance.

Overview[edit]

Western Civilization from cavemen to the Renaissance.

What Actually Happens[edit]

Western Civ 1 is basically a history class moving really fast. You cover paleolithic to neolithic man in about a day, and move onto Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilization. Other topics include Persian, Greek (Hellenic), Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Medieval culture. You cover the important people, political situations, and wars (and their deciding battles) in each of these phases. The class stops just before the Protestant Reformation, but the use of 1500 in the course title is just a matter of convenience. Because things don't happen in a vacuum, the topics covered can contain events as late as the 17th century.

It's very interesting if you like history, but this is not a required course, so don't worry if you don't.
