Official Description[edit]

America - A Historical Survey (33-155)
A general education course that will survey the scope of American History through selected chronologically-arranged topics.

Overview[edit]

American history from colonization to the present.

What Actually Happens[edit]

Contrary to popular belief, you do not learn almost all of American history in a semester. The semester is effectively your instructor's thesis. They cover the important events, but in such a way that it supports their claims. This does not mean that they distort history, but rather that they are focused on one theme. Like most humanities, history can teach many things, and many conclusions can be drawn, so the professor picks their favorite (i.e. they can teach from a Christian perspective, a feminist perspective, etc. Mine taught from the perspective that America is an exercise in pragmatism.). The key to doing well in this class is attending, and hoping your professor is interesting to you. Otherwise you'll be spending an inordinate amount of time reading the book and your notes that you scribbled out half-asleep.
