From the Northwest Catalog[edit]

111 Composition (3 hours)
Extensive practice in narrative, descriptive and expository writing, using supplementary readings to model form and to generate subject matter for composition.
Prerequisite: A grade of “C” or better in Eng 10-110, an ACT English score of 19-26 or successful placement challenge.

Overview[edit]

Students in the class get practice writing several different types of essays: Narratives, Research, Literary Analysis, Persuasive, Philisophical, and Informational.

Students also spend time reading and analyzing short stores from the Bedford Reader Anthology.

What Really Happens[edit]

The class is pretty much a crash course in the Modern Language Assosciation (MLA) formating system, assuming your sending school did not already enforce these rather arbitrary rules upon you. Taking time to attend conferences with the professor, and having them proofread your papers can help boost grades.

On the other hand, it's perfectly possible to sleep your way through this class if getting an 'A' is not important to you. You hardly learn anything that hasn't been pushed into your skull since the fourth grade. A mediocre paper often receives an A or B, and people have been known to write their papers in the three to five hours preceding the class. In fact, a little writing talent will get you very far.

Comparisons have ranged from "remedial 8th grade writing class" to "freshman level college writing course." Take from that what you will.
