Colloquium is the Second Year student analog to Seminar.  This course is evolving into something very different from Seminar, unfortunately.  The administration is trying to use colloquium in the first semester to help Second Year students figure out what they want to do.  Also, they try to help us with the college application process.  The second semester is for Second Year students to figure out what May session community service activities they are going to head.  Heading a community service activity for May is open to any student but is generally left up to the Second Years.

Overview

What Actually Happens

Colloquium might be considered the Second Year student analog to Seminar. However, the only similarity is in the number credit hours you receive. And the prospect of reducing credits to one per year (rather than the traditional one per semester) has been discussed. During the first portion of the class, you have lectures on how to write college essays, how many schools to apply to, and the like. For the latter half of the first semester, you are supposed to meet in groups based on your intended major (or for the less decisive, subject you really like). This doesn't really happen, and some groups have met only once during this time, effectively accomplishing nothing during that time.

Colloquium is apparently also where community service projects are chosen for May Session.
