Starts with colonial writers and goes through to the mid-1800s.  Authors include: Edwards, Hawthorne, Poe, Melville, Emerson, Thoreau, Dickinson, and Whitman.  The class includes a LOT of reading lengthy stories/poems that make absolutely no sense.  So, you go home, read twnety pages that make no sense whatsoever, then go to class and learn what you were ''supposed'' to get out of the reading.
