Introduction[edit]

Hey everyone! My name is Peter Sable. I was born in Springfield, MO in '93 and was raised in, well, its just easier to say the entire southwest Missouri area instead of listing all the places I've lived. I attended nine different school districts and junior year, as is probably obvious, I came to the Missouri Academy. First year I was a proud resident of 2nd West and second year I was a Community Leader for 3rd South. Especially in retrospect, the Academy was an amazing experience and helped shape me into the man I am today and gave me a much clearer since of, and yes I'm quoting Dr. Cleo here, integrity and quality. Its true though, the Academy, really does give you a sense of responsibility and leadership that prepares you more than enough for the next step. Currently a to be fourth year as they say, I would love to impart some advice on the Academy and indeed even the years thereafter.

Advice on the Academy[edit]

Keeping in mind that most of these were discovered through experience, therefore excuse my temporary hypocrisy.

  • 1) Use study hours - seriously they help
  • 2) Distractions kill - have fun, but don't forget the point of the academy - academics
  • 3) Sleep, nuff said, a medically recommended more than 4 hours a night minimum ESPECIALLY during finals.
  • 4) Have fun, you'll go crazy without it, just remember to take sometime for yourself and help with the seoond pillar of the Academy: Student Development.
  • 5) Don't hang out with just one person, you live with a building full of people probably more similar to you than you'll ever meet, take advantage of it, some of the friends you meet hear you'll know and remember for the rest of your life. So why seclude yourself to just hanging out with just one (yes I'm referring to relationships as well)
  • 6) If you can, group studying helps
  • 7) Shower, you'd think I wouldn't have to say it, but seriously
  • 8) Be involved, extracurriculars are there for a reason: their fun, good way to break away from school, good on college apps, and can teach you a lot
  • 9) Don't just memorize stuff to get the grade, you need the knowledge...so learn.
  • 10) Hell/Finals weeks SUCK, just be prepared.
  • 11) Complete as much of your college apps the summer before second year, trust me, otherwise college apps becoming a whole nother three credit class.
  • 12) When applying ask yourself were you want to be in five years, and remember I know money is important, but go where you'll be happy or where you really want to go. Though academics should be the number one reason, take other things into account including the social aspects. As for money, there really are scholarhips everywhere, they're just hidden so do what I did, search on google and after awhile real opportunities do start to come up.
  • 13) Talk to alumni (myself included), we can help and tell you how things really are and give a few nifty tips.
  • 14) Internships and research experience are an invaluable part of your education and can really give you a sense of what your future career may be like, so be sure to take advantage of them.
  • 15) Keep in touch with your friends at the Academy, cause they really are life long and after living through such an experience as the Academy, will understand you better than most.

The Academy is an amazing place and I could ramble on what could help you succeed there forever, but really the best way is to just do the best that you can with what you have. Its a home not just a school and it gives all us acadakids opportunities that no one else has..and well thats pretty awesome!
