Debian Linux

Debian is a free Linux-based operating system. Like nearly every Linux distribution, Debian uses the Linux kernel, but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project, leading them to follow Richard Stallman's lead and call their operating system Debian GNU/Linux. There is also work in progress for other kernels, such as Hurd, a microkernel being developed by the GNU project. Although the Debian itself costs money, other Debian based operating systems, like Ubuntu, are free.

The Debian project was founded by Ian Murdock in 1993. It's name comes from Debra, his wife and his name. Debian has no company behind it. The Debian project is sponsored by Software in the Public Interest. Debian can and is being used from anything from a Pentium 3 you can surf the web with to the mission critical server that has to be up 24/7 that you get the content from.
