About me

Mike, with an expression and stance concordant with one of his nicknames: conquistador

I'm Mike Nolan, a member of the Voyager class. I'm interested in programming, math, GNU/Linux and writing. Lately though, I've been feeling a bit dissatisfied with my life and have been trying to vary my interests. When I grow up I want to be a squirrel.

I'm interested in tunneling and other kinds of urban exploration, though there seems to be very little opportunity for this in Maryville.

Music

Non-exhaustive braindump.

Prodigy, Aphex Twin, Nirvana, A Perfect Circle, Tool, The Beatles, NIN, Adam's Off Ox, The Floating City, Radiohead, Meshuggah, Groupthink, Alkaline Trio, Thrice, Neutral Milk Hotel, NOFX, Kronos String Quartet, Clint Mansell, Opeth, Simon & Garfunkel, Iron & Wine, Ben Folds Five, 311, Weezer, Portishead, Garbage

I've found lately that I really like feminine (which is only a subset of female) vocalists. I also find that happy music is good for my disposition, and I want to balance the scales a little, as most of what I have above is pretty damn depressing music or feeling sorry for yourself music. Suggestions welcome!

After MASMC

Applying to Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, and Missouri-Columbia. Probably majoring in CS, though I've considered library science and linguistics, too. I used to want to be a video game designer, but the competition is so intense (video games attract obsessive, hyperfocused types) and games have mostly lost their joy. Meanwhile, you can find me curled up in a ball, crying about it.
