On January 1st, 2008, Ben Passer will officially change his name to "Missouri S&T is a hella shitty name."

I'm currently a third-year academite at the (soon to be, at the moment) Missouri University of Science and Technology (i.e., UMR). I'm working toward Bachelor of Science degrees in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, although my long-term career interests lie in pure mathematics. That means graduate study at one of a number of possible institutions followed by professorship. Yes, my plans are never to leave academia -- that's how much I like it compared to everything else.

Here are some random words of wisdom for current academites.

1. At least once during May Session, try to catch a squirrel. I didn't, and I've regretted it ever since.

2. Go to a professor's office hours. It turns out that even if you don't need help, professors usually have interesting things to talk about in their fields, assuming they're not busy.

3. Realize that there are times to challenge authority, and times just to accept it. Don't always do just one.

4. Binges on energy drinks from the station are *very* fun.

5. Study almost every day, but never for more than a few hours, unless you really need to do so.

6. Play lots of Dance Dance Revolution. Seriously, that game is kickass.

7. Make sure you don't run out of Aladine if you're not good at pulling off mooching at the end of the term.

8. M.R. Prevails.
