From the Northwest Catalog[edit]

141 Spanish: Communication and Culture I (3 hours) Initiates awareness of Hispanic cultures along with the ability to understand simple conversation in Spanish and to communicate basic needs and activities. Intended for students with no previous study of Spanish. Does not count towards major or minor in Spanish. (F, S, SS)

Overview[edit]

An introductory course to the Spanish language. By the end of the course you'll be able to form simple sentences and hold simple conversations. If you've taken Spanish in high school, test out and go straight to 14-142, as you won't learn much new here.

What Really Happens[edit]

Tests and quizzes are pretty much set in amount, but are made by the professor. In all classes there will be a "workbook", which is just another name for lots and lots of worksheets. There are also 2-3 writing assignments where you will write short passages in Spanish about things of your choice. Besides day to day homework, which may or may not be counted in your grade, this is what makes up the class.

Starting 2006-2007, the department is using an online workbook system called Quia. These are pretty much Spanish OWLs, except they can be done as many times over as you like, until you get the score you want.
