Page names

There isn't much consistency in naming, so before we start on anything else, let's decide that. My instinct is to do First_Last and not bother with Dr., etc. since that can potentially change or might be insulting if we omit on one but not another. Three to agree on a style should suffice. -Chrax

Misc discussion

Wow... that's a lot of shit to write, Brian - Stuey

Yes. -Goofyheadedpunk

do we want a section for government professors? smith, mclaughlin, hesse, and whoever mark had. i think we all have to take that class, right?

i keep forgetting the signing thing -Sillyputty

are we going to want to have a page per teacher? if so, what do we want to say, eh? - Stuey

I expect it will basically be an evaluation of teaching style and the like. But I think those are useful. Either that, or we could put an evaluation under their names on the list. -Chrax

So... we don't seem to have a lot to say about professors. I sure can't think of anything worthy of a full page. Do we still want separate pages or a small summary underneath their name on this page? -Chrax

For professor info...

I recommend the site Rate My Professors.com if you're looking for opinions on your future professors. - Mpnolan 23:44, 13 Apr 2005 (EDT)

I don't like that site. I'd rather get my opinions from other students that I know. - Stuey
Nice argument, except you forgot the part where you make a point. The site has problems, such as too many angry students giving professors low scores in revenge, but I'd say about 1/4 are helpful. How would a future student ask his/her friends for opinions? I'm not sure, but are you suggesting _we_ write some pages? I plan to Real Soon Now. - Mpnolan 11:48, 14 Apr 2005 (EDT)
Yes, I think reviews of professors from Academy students would be helpful. How do we want to do this? Should we make a page (say the ones already linked from the list) for each person and then put any reviews we have and then sign them? Because that seems like the best move to me. -Chrax
I think each professor should have a separate page, and that page should include a totally fact-based description (like subject area, whether the person has a Ph.D., if so what their focus was in, etc.) and then below that a review section. - Mpnolan 20:43, 14 Apr 2005 (EDT)

Format

Has there been a good format for a professor info page made yet? While these many contributions of late are welcome, they're done very haphazardly, and we should probably have sections for info and then student reviews (kind of like classes). -65.69.58.99

The new template

I'm feeling some regret after making the new template and applying it to all pages. I worry that people will be boxed in and that the converted pages are still very disorganized. What do you guys think is the best format for professor pages? - Mpnolan 23:13, 16 Oct 2005 (EDT)

Libel and such

This discussion began in the comments of List of professors, in response to persistent deletion of the content of that page along with many professors' pages.

Dear troll, As you'll notice if you visit the recent changes page, it takes us somewhere in the neighborhood of two minutes to undo what you spend a half an hour doing.

Perhaps you should consider giving it a rest? I'm sure annoying a handful of geeks isn't particularly rewarding. Besides, this likely counts as harassment, which I am quite sure is against Northwest computing policy.

Think on it.

Chris

This website is a disgrace to all Northwest Missouri State University professors/instructors. Your personal opinions of one's appearance and personality is unwarranted and slanderous. Merely deleting these opinions does not constitute harassment.
Dear troll,
I'm afraid it's not your place to censor opinions you find disgraceful. Our professors' section is probably one of the least developed in our Wiki, but in essence it is similar to such sites as RateMyProfessors.com, with only Academy opinions included. I'm terribly sorry that their sites aren't Wikis so you are unable to vandalize them as well, but no matter whether you find our opinions distasteful, inaccurate, or disgraceful, I must reiterate this point: It is not your place to censor them.
Furthermore, our opinions of the professors' personalities are quite relevant to the target audience of this Wiki, which happens to be incoming and current Academy students who wish to know more about the Academy, the University, and the professors they are going to have. I'll agree that appearance isn't particularly relevant, but unless it was presented as a fact (and is not true), and not an opinion, our policy is to allow students almost total freedom of expression. Note that this does not include the right to delete the opinions of others.
We have taken pains to ensure that opinions were clearly marked as such, and in the case of an exception you could, instead of deleting everything, spend your time indicating that they are opinions. If you have a specific complaint about the content of a page, the corresponding discussion page is the appropriate place to file these complaints. It is obvious, however, that you are not interested in raising the tone of the Wiki or ensuring that all information is factual. You are a troll, and apparently a childish one that is incapable of seeing viewpoints with which he disagrees without attempting to remove them. I recommend that you grow up and realize that you don't have a right not to be offended.
Hope your day is going well. I'm sure we'll hear from you again. But since you seem at least somewhat inclined towards conversation, may I ask what interest you have in this matter?
Chris
Dear Chris,
In response to this website, why do you feel it's perfectly ethical of you and the rest of the students to describe the professors' personalities? As if you any of you really know them personally. For example: For Matt Johnson - visit him in his office if you like hippie, leftist type people...He has an attractive wife and a kid that tends to get sick a lot. What does the appearance of his wife have to do with his teaching ability? Or Brian Haile - As a person, he really is a good guy. He's a family guy, which is always admirable in a person Again, how does this relate to the way he performs in the workplace?
Would you like it if I started a website that described Academy students' personalities & appearances? Think about that.
Well, I'm glad you chose to respond in a more constructive manner than previously. Points are not generally well taken when they are made via destruction of content rather than criticism of said content.
I have to agree that much of the information is irrelevant, in my opinion. But I do not see irrelevant data as an ethical breach. If you think a piece is libellous, by all means remove the libel. It is very probable that professors section has probably had the least review; the template itself was recently made, and most of the changes we've made have been to simply reformat existing pages. Personally, I have difficulty patrolling the professors' pages since I no longer attend the academy and do not know most of the professors. (This isn't to say that I can't recognize libel, but that reading professors' pages bores me to the point where I don't get very far.) However, since you do bring up valid points, I will make a pointed effort to revise these pages. I will allow personality and appearance evaluations, since it gives students an idea of what to expect, and how to recognize the professors even before having them. Of course descriptions will come down to a judgment call as to whether it is libellous or simply colloquial.
In return, I ask that you refrain from persistently deleting our pages. Also, I invite you to participate in this endeavor, since you clearly have definite views on what is and isn't acceptable. (You may even wish to modify our Editing policies, found here: http://moacad.com/index.php?title=Editing_policies)
And if you started a website to describe Academy students' personalities and appearances, I would think you are probably within your rights (I don't know if there are laws regarding such documentation of minors), if somewhat peculiarly obsessed.
Chris
Chris:
Fine, I will refrain from deleting your so-called "opinions," although I find it difficult to understand the relevance of much of the content in the Professors section. Most University departments have a website with a c.v. on each professor as well as a picture for your viewing pleasure, since you feel it is of utmost importance that every student know the physical description of their teacher. In return, I assume you will hold to your commitment to revise this section.
As far as the Academy student website, I was merely pointing out that most students probably wouldn't take kindly to having their physical attributes and personality profiles posted for the world to read. I, on the other hand, would never stoop to such low brow tactics.
Good Day!
Err. It should be noted that my schedule is packed pretty much solid this semester. The lack of work being done is not me making promises I don't intend to keep, but me not having time to do it at the moment. Just so you don't think I'm renegging and return to vigilante reputation protection mode. -Chrax

Dear <insert name>, Not to butt into conversation that could probably be well off on its own, but I would actually encourage professors of NWMSU to read the academy wiki and the page about them on it to better their teaching styles. Views of academy students on teaching styles of professors are radically different than those of normal college students. In my point of view as an academy student, I have never witnessed a college student put forth anywhere near the effort that academy students do. I have never seen a college student participate with any amount of intellect behind their questions and actions and therefore, the opinions of college students go on Ratemyprofessor.com, while ours belong here at moacad.com. There is a mindset of academy students that is passed on year from year that new academites want to know things about their professors, things like teaching style, how to study, how to stay awake, or even appearance. They want to hear these things from academy students of previous years because an academy student's experience in a class is much different than a normal college student's. Most of the opinions on teacher that you think appear as slanderous should be taken by those professors as their weakness in reaching out to their students. Some things such as appearance are just little quirks that academy students notice, because we are strange, and feel that they need to share with other academites. -Brandon
