Classes taught

Style & personality

Dr. Eichler is a good professor. His teaching style is fairly relaxed--just print off his powerpoints and go to class. All his lecture material is in the powerpoints and is fairly easy to follow. However, make sure to read the chapters in the book before you go through them in class. Doing the questions in the chapters helps you brush up on the material as well as puts you in good standing with Eichler (make sure he knows you're making an effort).

Dr. Eichler will rarely give homework in class. The class grade comes from two places only: tests and OWLs. There are traditionally four 100-point one-hour exams and one 200-point two-hour final exam. His tests have a fairly consistant pattern. The largest amounts of questions are multiple choice with a few points a question. Their are, however, equations that are worth large lumps of points at the end of the test that are put in the short answer form. Unlike Dr. Toomey, Dr. Eichler's class does not require as much memorization of equations. Dr. Eichler will generally provide an equation sheet that will tell you MOST of the equations you need to know.

The final exam is made cumulative if and only if the class average for one of the one-hour exams is less than 70. Otherwise it covers only the material since the last one-hour exam.

Dr. Eichler is most commonly know for his mildy humorous nature and is probably one of the nicest chemists at Northwest. He has flexible office hours, is approachable, and very helpful. However, don't expect any favors from him if you slack or sleep in class.

Oh... and Dr. Eichler is about the biggest pyro I've ever encountered. If you want to learn more about that, volunteer to help him do demostrations for random events.

Student opinions

Daniel: *Yawn* Another powerpoint lecturer. Study them well and you will do well. Also, don't be stupid, do the OWLS. They help and are easy points. He's somewhat forgiving with grades, I found, he wants you to succeed. He's also kind of cute. I liked Toomey better though, I could never, ever fall asleep in that class (except I almost did once when I hadn't slept the night before).

Ben: Dr. Eichler can be a very boring professor sometimes, and his powerpoints don't really help that, but they do make nice study aids considering they contain just about everything he says. He (along with Dr. Toomey, I think) has eliminated rounding from his grading policy entirely, so don't ask for any favors; just study for the tests and do the OWLS. He is a mediocre lecturer, but he doesn't seem to mind answering tons of dumb questions, as we experienced this semester (spring 2006). Also, he goes over the given class time almost every day, which can get extremely annoying toward the end of the semester. Overall, I would say he's satisfactory, but not desirable, so take Dr. Toomey instead.
